iPhone vs Android Security: Which Actually Protects You More in 2026?

Ask anyone which phone is more secure and you get the same answer instantly: iPhone. That’s not wrong. But there’s one attack type where Android actually has the edge, and almost nobody brings it up. I didn’t know this stat myself until I went looking for it, and it genuinely changed how I think about my own phone habits.

The Short Answer: iPhone wins decisively on malware, it’s not close. Android accounts for the vast majority of mobile malware globally, mostly because of sideloading. But iPhone users get hit with phishing attempts at almost double the rate Android users do. Different phones, different weak spots.

Malware: Not Even Close

Android eats 95 to 98 percent of all mobile malware globally. Not a typo. Google’s own security data found tens of millions of malicious sideloaded apps in a single year, and that number’s climbing.

It’s the sideloading. Installing apps outside the Play Store is genuinely useful if you want that freedom. It’s also how malware actually gets on your phone in the first place. Apple just doesn’t let you do this, outside of the alternative marketplaces the EU forced them to allow. One review process, one gatekeeper, way fewer openings for something malicious to sneak through. Phishing: Where iPhone Actually Loses

Here’s the stat that surprised me. iPhone users get phished at roughly double the rate of Android users, somewhere around 16 to 26 percent versus 7 to 12 percent depending on the report.

Nobody knows for certain why, but the working theory makes sense: iPhone’s reputation for being locked down makes people a little too relaxed. “My phone can’t get hacked” is exactly the mindset that gets you to click a bad link without thinking twice. Malware needs a security hole. Phishing just needs you.

If you’re on iPhone, don’t let the malware stats make you sloppy about texts and emails. That’s your actual blind spot.

Updates

Apple ships security patches to every supported iPhone the same day, always. Android depends entirely on what you bought. Pixel’s fast, which is part of why we liked it in our Pixel 10 Pro comparison. Plenty of budget Android brands take months, if they bother at all.

A three-month-old unpatched vulnerability sitting on some mid-range Android phone is a real risk. Has nothing to do with malware or phishing, just neglect.

Privacy, the Overlooked Split

The part people miss: Android encrypts your cloud backups end to end by default. Apple makes you go dig into settings and manually turn on Advanced Data Protection to get the same thing. That’s genuinely a point for Android that almost never comes up in these comparisons.

So, Which One Actually Protects You

If accidentally downloading something bad is your fear, iPhone wins, clearly, not a close call.

If you’re already careful and never sideload on Android anyway, that malware gap barely touches you, and Android’s automatic backup encryption starts looking pretty good.

Honestly? Your own habits do more for your security than either logo does. Clicking a phishing link, reusing the same password everywhere, ignoring an update notification for six months, that’s what actually gets people, not which app store their phone came with.
